Aldiko now available on the Android Market!

We are excited to announce today the release of Aldiko, our ebook reading application for Android smartphones. Aldiko enables you to very conveniently download from a vast collection of books and read them right on your phone.

Aldiko supports the EPUB industry standard format for reflowable electronic books and lets you fully customize your reading experience (display brightness, font and background color, font size and type, margin, etc.).

We have partnered with Feedbooks to provide seamless access to their huge selection of free public domain books. Aldiko also implements the emerging OPDS standard for content distribution, which will enable us to add even more content in the future.

Check out the app today on the Android market! We’re looking forward to your feedbacks!

Your application is beautiful…lovely interface and great layout. When is paid content coming? Will there be the ability to get newer books that are not public domain (like eBook Reader, Mobipocket, or better yet, Kindle)? Thanks again!

  2. JR says:

For Kindle content you’ll have to DeDRM it yourself. No idea how to convert to ePub, although it does convert to Mobi format.

  3. Luqman says:

Is there anyway to use this app with my own collection of EPUBs? Or am I limited to what I download with the program?

  4. John Lee says:

Is it possible to read in Korean language on Aldiko? And do you have any plan to provide DRM by yourself or Adobe epub DRM?

Extending the catalog of books available for download (including paid content) is at the top of our priority list. We are trying to roll that out as fast as possible and are welcoming partnerships with content providers interested in selling their ebooks through our app.

Being able to import ebooks you already own has been another highly requested feature and we are working on enabling that in our next release.

  7. Tiffany Wong says:

    John,

I could not find a sample epub file in Korean language to make sure it renders properly, but it should normally be supported. We tested with Chinese, Japanese, Russian and they show up nicely. If you can point us to (or send us) a sample Korean epub file, we can test that.

  8. da best. Keep it going! Thank you

I downloaded this application today, and it’s already my favorite on Android. Please keep us updated on when we will be able to purchase modern/recent books.

  10. Matt Austern says:

Support for mobi format would be my highest priority. I have a lot of mobi books that I used to read on my treo, and I’d very much like to find a program that lets me use them.

Do you have the market drm turned on? I’m unable to find anything but a few free book/apps in market. Maybe since I’m on the dev phone?

  12. blog-admin says:

Yes, Google’s forward lock prevents the app to appear on developer phones.

  13. John Lee says:

I will send a epub file for you to test with Korean as you mentioned. I am also wondering if you have any plan to support other languages as Stanza support 12 languages for application menu and font. If so, we can help the translation to Korean. In additon, we want to be your partner to promote Aldiko and make business in Korea.

I’m unable to find this application on Market, but I can find specific books just fine. What’s up?

  15. blog-admin says:

Which country are you in? The full version is a paid-app, Android markets in some countries do not support paid-apps, therefore, you may not be able to find us. However, we are trying to find a solution to get around it. Thanks!

  16. Rae says:

I love this application and can’t wait till there’s a more broad variety of books available. I would like to see some Patricia Cornwell, Sydney Sheldon, Danielle Steel…… just more of a variety. Your site rocks!!

  17. Alex says:

    Hi,
I can’t find Aldiko on the market, too.

I live in Italy, and I read that recently the market has been opened for paid apps in my country, but still I can’t find it.
Maybe you can just extend the regions in which you sell on the market config.

I am very interested in the latest addition (importing my own ebooks) of your software, as I have a big collection of ebooks (nearly 5000) in epub format and other readers can’t handle that much or can’t access books.

    Thank you.

I’m in Australia and I cannot see this application on the market… Is there any other way to download and install it?

  19. blog-admin says:

    Hi Alex and Paul,

Thanks for interested in Aldiko. In both Italy and Australia, Android markets support paid-applications. You should be normally able to find Aldiko, we made it available for all countries. Aldiko is under reference category, or you can just simply do a search for “Aldiko” on Android market. If you can not find us, it may due to the kind of phones you use. Which type of Android phone do you use?

Meanwhile, we are exploring new channel to distribute our application.

Please let us know if you continue to have problem to find us.

    Hi

I have a HTC Dream (also known as T-mobile G1) running Android 1.5 Cup Cake.

However.. I bought my phone outright and so it isn’t locked. I read on the Internet somewhere that unlocked phones do not have full access to the market. I cannot seem to see any paid applications and a search for Aldiko finds only the free books formatted for Aldiko.

The application looks great and I still want to get it…. is there any other way?

    Paul

  21. Alex says:

    Hi,

    I own a Samsung Galaxy GT-7500.

I can find other paid apps in the market
But recently, reading a forum, I found that (it seems) if the developer signs the application with copy protection in the market, it doesn’t get shown on the market.
Some users complained they can’t find some apps.

I don’t know if this is valid only for my phone or for others too (in Italy we have HTC Magic and Samsung Galaxy, for now)

    Thanks for your answer.
    Bye.

  22. blog-admin says:

    Hi Alex,

Thanks for your interest in Aldiko. We did add copyright protection on our application, however, only users with developer phones will not be able to access to applications with copyright protection. Since you have a Samsung Glaxy, you should be able to get us. May be you can contact your cellphone carrier to ask about if some applications have been blocked on your phone? On our side, it seems not much we can do on this aspect. Please feel free to let us know if you have further questions or if there is anything that we can do after you contacting your cellphone carrier. Thanks.

The Application visibility issue is entirely unrelated to membership of the OHA, as has been suggested. As it currently appears to be a server fix no change to handsets should be required, and once resolved we expect all paid applications in the English language to reappear.”
